Twitter is a popular website where people tweet, or write one or two sentence messages for their followers to see. These can also include links to websites, pictures, videos, and all sorts of things like that. Twitter launched promoted accounts in October 2010.When an account is promoted, an algorithm is created for the account to find new users who may be interested in following it. The account will then show up in those users "Suggestions for you" section. This will get more followers for the account, where they can promote their products, services, or whatever else they might want to.
The algorithm is based on the users who already follow the promoted account. It will determine other accounts that a large portion of those followers also follow. When it has that list of accounts it will determine who is following those accounts, but not following the promoted account. The promoted account will then show up on those users "Suggestions for you" section with the hopes that the users will choose to follow it.
This can be used for huge promotional purposes. With so many users on Twitter, if a large number of these users follow the promoted accounts, the companies or people responsible for these accounts will have a large audience to promote towards. News and information about the latest products, services, shows, concerts, and anything else a person can think of will be right on everybody's Twitter pages.
These promoted accounts will have a great effect on the way advertising is done. It is similar to spam emails except, people get to choose which accounts they follow, therefore get to choose which sort of spam advertisements they see on a daily basis.
Also, if a user wants information about a certain company and the things they are doing, these promoted accounts will help to bring that information to the user's attention. As long as, they are following a lot of common accounts with the promoted account, that is.
If a company or person has a product, service, or anything else to promote this is a great way to do it. The more followers the promoted company gets the more suggestion lists it will show up on, allowing for magnificent growth if the account is hosted by a popular person or company.
When Twitter launches promoted accounts, it could very possibly be one of the best forms of advertising and promotion available to people and companies today. With the amount of users on Twitter, the possibilities are endless as to what can be done with this tool.
