Let's face it: a growing number of people are using Twitter these days (best stats I could find; as of April 2010,Total Users: 1.5+ million; Total Active Users: 350,000 per week; Total Twitter Messages: 4 million/day). This is a lot of people spending a lot of time on Twitter who still need to get things done. Yet many people do not know how to use twitter to it's full extent. In this article I will summarise some of the key tools that twitter has to offer to integrate it with other tools that you may be using.
If you want to spend a lot of time conversing with people on Twitter, that's great, but many people still need to get their tasks done. Let's take a look at how to do that.
Why use Twitter to get things done? Twitter isn't necessarily the best platform for getting things done but if you're already using it a lot, it might be easier or faster for you to do things while still in Twitter. Keep in mind if you're a business owner twitter is a great source of potential business leads, if you know how to tap into it - my next article!
1. Reminders: Need a quick reminder that you have an appointment, or need to follow up on something later? Follow "timer" on Twitter, and send it a direct message with a reminder time and it will ping you at that time. For example: "d timer 30 pick up Chloe".
2. To-do list: A couple of popular to-do services are on Twitter: Remember the Milk (on Twitter) and Nozbe (on Twitter). Follow them and send them direct messages to add things to your to-do list, or to check the items on your list.
3. Calendar: If you use Google Calendar (gCal), go to Twittercal, then follow gCal on Twitter and add events by sending direct messages to gCal. For example: "d gcal meeting with paul tomorrow at 7pm".
4. Delegate: If you're going through your to-do list or email and find a task that's better suited for someone else, sending that person a direct message (assuming they're on Twitter) can be quicker and easier than sending an email or making a phone call.
5. Follow up: The same applies to following up. I've done it a bunch of times; instead of opening up your email program, composing a new message, typing in the person's address and the subject line, and then writing the email ... you can just direct message them on Twitter: "d zen_habits don't forget to answer my interview questions"
6. Accountability with goals: Want some extra motivation to achieve your goals? Announce through Twitter or on your blog that you're going to post your progress updates every day on Twitter. For example, if you're trying to eat healthier, you can post everything you eat on Twitter. Trying to exercise? Post your workouts on Twitter. It's great motivation, and you can get some support and encouragement from your Twitter friends.
7. Get info or ideas quickly: If you have a good Twitter network, you can ask a question and usually get a few responses quicker than many other methods. I've gotten website and service recommendations, ideas for a post I was writing, restaurant recommendations, people interested in a job, and more.
8. Do real work: It's possible to do real work on Twitter - people have written stories or posts by writing them in little chunks in Twitter. It might be worth a try. But if that doesn't work, my strongest recommendation is to turn Twitter off when you need to do some real work. Then, when you're done, reward yourself with 10 minutes on Twitter if twittering is your thing!
Other useful Twitter services:
1. Tweetlater: plan your tweets ahead of time and schedule delivery over time
2. TweetDeck: helps you manage your tweets and to sort through them easily
3. TweetPic: very useful tool to submit your pictures, no additional account needed other than your twitter account
4. Tweetbeep: A service to keep track of keywords through alerts that you set up. You'll get an email notification if anyone mentions you or your brand or your blog posts in their tweets.
5. StrawPoll: create a poll. Your Twitter contacts can participate in the poll by simply sending an @reply message.
6. TwitResponse: allows you to schedule delivery of your tweets - very useful if you want to set up a bunch of tweets in the future.
7. Zen Habits: Yes, you can get updates on the latest Zen Habits posts, as well as The Power of Less Tips of the Day, and more.
8. TwiTips: An excellent blog with dozens of tips for using Twitter.
I will follow this article with another that explains in more detail how to promote your business very easily using twitter

Promoting Your Business or Product With Twitter
Author: FMRacicot
So, why do people follow you on Twitter? People usually follow others on Twitter because they find the person or business interesting. Maybe they want to keep up on all the things that you're doing. Maybe they want to be the first to know about any new products or updates to existing products that you provide. They want and expect to learn more about you or your business. So how do we use that power to promote our business or product?
Now, some will say that Twitter is not for marketing your business or products. They may unfollow you because they feel you're trying to sell them something, and not contributing to what they are looking for. The thing to remember here is that you will never be able to please everyone. This is true in all aspects of life and business. If you are producing quality, useful products or services that will improve people's lives or business there's no reason to not tell your Twitter followers about it. After all, they are following you because they want to know about these things.
The main thing to remember when using Twitter to promote your products and services is that people hate to be sold. A good way to lose your following and degrade your brand overall is to try to hard sell people with Twitter.
So how do we reach the middle ground? After all, we are business people and we are looking to increase our market and ultimately our sales. The key is to remember that Twitter is a social tool. When you tweet, think of how you would take the tweet in a normal conversation. If you were at an event and the topic of what you do for a living comes up, and they ask what you do for a living. Would you say:
"I sell TV's, and you know I have the perfect TV for you! The TV has the latest technology and is beautiful in any room. I sell more TV's than anyone in the area, so I know I can get you a great deal! When would you like to purchase?"
First reaction from most people would be to either walk away from you, act like they have a phone call, or just politely decline.
Instead of that, you could say:
"I sell TV's. If you ever need a good TV for a good price, let me know."
In both cases you have made an offer and you promoted your product. However, our second example more than likely will lead to the conversation continuing normally, allowing you to build a relationship with a potential customer.
The social aspect of Twitter is pretty much the same as any other social environment. If you have a new product coming out soon, tell people about it. Don't hard sell it. Tell them what is great about it. Tell them the features and how it will help fill the needs that they are looking to fill. Build the product up through multiple tweets. Some of the big product launches from the biggest names in the world use Twitter for weeks before the product launches as way to increase market buzz. People love to be in the know of things that are new and upcoming. Giving them a little bit at a time and keeping them interested will increase your success.
From a sales perspective, you are not going to be making a sale in a 140 character message are you? The message in your tweet is going to drive your prospects to the next step. If you are using a sales page that does all the hard work with the aggressive sales techniques, by all means send people to it and let it do its job. Use your tweets to peak people's interest to get them to want to see what you're pointing to.
So, when writing a tweet, try to make sure that it doesn't read like a headline. Try to look at it from a general point of view. If someone was to retweet your tweet, would they feel that they are spamming a product? Or would they feel like they are sharing something valuable? Don't put to much hype or unbelievable claims in your tweets either. It's an instant turn off for people and they will not likely click through to your next step, let alone share it with others. Also make sure that when writing tweets, that people won't feel tricked once they see what you have linked to.
Promoting your products and services through Twitter correctly will not only increase your product/company brand positively, it will increase your sales as more people spread the word about your products and services.

Tips and Tools on How to Grow Your Twitter Following
Author: Vince
Growing a large following is something many new Twitter users struggle with. They see all these big accounts with 20, 50 or even 100K followers and wonder how did they ever get there?
Today we will give you some tips and tools on how to grow your following steadily and we'll also make sure that you stay within the Twitter guidelines to avoid account suspension. There are certain practices that are not allowed and the last thing you want is to get your account suspended after you worked hard to get a decent following.
Quality or quantity?
This is the first thing you have to ask yourself. Do you want a small group of followers where you can easily keep track of the timeline and interact with everybody or do you want to grow as big as possible and utilize Twitter lists to keep up with the tweets you care about?
If you have a Twitter account for personal use the first option will probably work best for you. If you have any commercial aspirations and would like to promote your brand or business to the world market your goal will be to reach as many potential clients as possible. Growing your Twitter following is an easy and low cost method to promote your business or brand worldwide.
Tools of the trade
These are a few tools we use to manage our account. There are many more tools out there but today we will stick to the tools that work for us.
FriendorFollow
Simply enter your user name and it will show you who isn't following back, who is a fan and mutual followings. If you connect with Twitter it will also give you the option to follow or unfollow users.
Manageflitter
Similar to FriendorFollow but more advanced and it can filter your account for a variety of stats such as users without a profile image or users that are quiet or tweet a lot. There is a pro upgrade available but the basic mode has all the features an average user will need.
Socialoomph
When your account starts to grow exponentially it becomes hard to keep track of all your new followers. If you want set up a welcome message for all your new followers this is the tool to use. You can set up an auto DM and welcome new followers. DO NOT add a link to that message because that's what everybody is doing and will only tick people off. Come up with something creative and original within the 140 character limit.
There are also features that will allow you to auto tweet status updates but that is NOT done as you should keep it real on Twitter, more about this at the end of this blog post.
Twiends
Fun and addictive would be the best way to describe this tool! You can actually use this to grow your stats on Twitter, Facebook, Website and YouTube. You can earn credits for connecting with other Twiends users and use those credits to let others connect with you. Sort of like a marketplace. You can even tweak your setting to get higher quality followers and there is an option to buy credits if you don't have the time to earn credits manually.
Twellow
If you want to find followers in a specific geographical area or category this is the tool for you. It lets you search for users per city or from a directory of categories. This is great if you have a local business and you want to connect with all the Twitter users in your city for example. You can also follow and unfollow within this tool.
Now how do I get followers?
All the above will help you to manage the new followers as your account starts to grow. Obtaining new followers can done in many ways.
These are bad practices that could get your account suspended. We're not celebrities that have 500K followers and only follow 10 users back. Your account should have a healthy follower ratio.
Remember that you can only follow 10% more than your follower count when you pass the 2000 follower mark. Example: 3000 followers will allow you to follow 3300 users.
Keeping it real
This is what it's all about. It's alright to try and get a large following but don't do any of the following:

A Beginners Guide to Twitter (Part 3)
In part three of this series we will be going over Retweets, Hashtags, link shortening, and some third party tools to help you with your Twitter Marketing success. If you have not started using Twitter yet, be sure to read the first two parts of the A Beginner's Guide to Twitter (Part 1) and (Part2) which goes over setting up your Twitter account, and the basic functions on how to use Twitter.
Let's start with Retweeting.
Retweets
While using twitter you may come across tweets that you like. They can be topics that you feel should be shared with your followers, or it could be a tip that you want to forward to your followers. You can also find tweets that you may want to respond to. This is where "Retweets" come in. Twitter's Retweet (otherwise known as "RT") feature allows you to quickly share that Tweet with all of your followers.
Retweeting is a very simple process. When you find a tweet that you want to share/forward to all of your followers, you simply hover over the tweet, and find the Retweet icon highlighted on the bottom part of the tweet. The icon is not visible until you hover over the tweet, so be sure to give it a second if you don't see it right away. When you click on the icon it will ask you to submit, and it will then Retweet the tweet to your followers.
Retweets can be tracked like most things in twitter. If you are interested to see "RT's", you can see them by selecting the "Retweets" tab toward the top of the page. You will then have a couple options. You can see all "Retweets by you", "Retweets by other", and "your tweets, Retweeted".
Hashtags
Hashtags (#tag) are another great tool to use in twitter. The common use for a Hashtag is to develop or continue a common topic for the community to track easily. Users can use search.twitter.com to keep up to date on a particular topic, or they can use it to track trends in the community. A Hashtag added to a tweet acts as a way to create categories, groups or topics for tweets.
A good example of a Hashtags use would be a group of people that are attending a seminar or workshop. While attending the event they tweet notes, or about there experiences and add a #eventname to their tweet. Doing this allows an easy reference to updates about the event. Event organizers can use this to keep an eye on trends about the event, as well as use it as a promotional tool.
Hashtags are commonly used in the news industry as well to keep people updated on daily happenings in real time. The fires in San Diego a couple years ago are a prime example of how Hashtags are used. Anyone looking to get updates on the fire would search for #sandiegofire and they would instantly get a list of the latest tweets with real time updates on what was happening.
Hashtags can also be searched for in most search tools now days. Google gives real time results for Hashtag searches. Try a search for #wonders in a separate window. You will see the "Realtime results for #wonders" towards the bottom of the page.
Link Shortening
Straight from support.twitter.com:
"There are a variety of websites that can shorten your long links, making them easier to fit into Twitter's 140 character limit. These services can provide you with a shorter version of any URL you want to share. Then, you can use the shorter version in your Tweet, and anyone who clicks on it will be redirected to the longer URL. It's that easy!"
There are a number of different tools to use for shortening your links. This is important as you always want to get your message across and not lose characters due to length of the link.
Two common places to get your links shortened are:
* http://bit.ly/
* http://tinyurl.com/
Consider third-party applications.
An entire market has been developed around Twitter. Most of the desktop applications to manage your twitter account also have built in link shortening, so be sure to look for that as well. Some of the most useful applications are:
Twitter for Facebook application. This application automatically syncs your tweets with your Facebook status. Once set up, you will never have to make another Facebook update as it will be updated every time you tweet something.
TweetGlide. This is the application that I use to manage Twitter on my desktop. It's a great application as it allows you to organize your followers by groups. They are set up in a column formation which makes it easy to see your @Mentions, Direct Messages and anything else that you want to keep on top of. TweetGlide is also a great tool for businesses and Internet Marketers as it has a built in advertising platform that allows you to help build traffic to your sites. It's a great FREE tool that you should definitely check out.
Twitter is one of those applications that are best learned by using it. The best thing to do is to just start trying it out. You can't really make that many mistakes. Try to remember that Twitters main purpose is to enjoy the adventure of communication with people online. Building a relationship with your customers and people you meet online is a rewarding thing.

A Beginners Guide to Twitter (Part 2)
In part two of this series we will be going over the basic functions of Twitter and working to publish your first Tweet. If you have not started using Twitter yet, be sure to read the first part of A Beginner's Guide to Twitter (Part1) series which goes over setting up your Twitter account.
Now that you're set up with an account, it's time to start following some people. If you imported your contacts you should already be following a number of people from your E-Mail service. If not, you can start by clicking on the "Search" field at the top of your homepage. You can type in a username or a first and last name. When you do this, Twitter will give you a list of the Twitterers who match your search criteria. Twitter also allows you to do advanced searches by location and the like. Once you have found a contact you wish to follow, you can begin following them by simply clicking on the Follow button below their description.
Basic Commands
When using Twitter, think of it as a room full of people, all sitting around having a conversation. When you update your status (a tweet), you are speaking to the whole group. Everyone that is following you gets to hear what you have to say. Do remember that your tweets are limited to 140 characters, so it is a good practice to be straight to the point of your update.
Replies
If you want to direct your comments to one specific person in your conversation, while also making sure that everyone can here, use the "Reply" function. You address the person by using their Twitter username preceded by the "@" symbol. An example:
@fmracicot check out this great product that I just discovered.
In this example, everyone following fmracicot and me will see the message, but I am directing the message to fmracicot. (People not following both of us will not see the message.)
You can also use the reply function to refer to someone by name. For example"
I'm headed out to meet with @fmracicot. Looking forward to our brainstorming session.
Replies become "clickable links". If someone that is following me clicks on one of the names, they will automatically go to that persons Twitter profile page. This gives them the option to also follow that person.
Direct Messages
Continuing with our "conversation" with a room full of people, you can also use the "direct message" function. A direct message is similar to whispering to the person you are talking to. They can hear you, but nobody else in the room can. Direct messages are sent to the person you send it to, and only that person. An example on using a direct message:
d fmracicot Can you please bring the sales statistics with you to our meeting?
Tracking
Tracking is an SMS or IM only feature that allows you to receive all tweets that match a word you specify. If you wanted to receive all updates that match "TweetersMarketing", you would send 'track TweetersMarketing'. All updates sent from tracking will begin with parenthesis. You can also easily stop getting these messages by sending 'untrack TweetersMarketing'.
Your first Tweet
So you're all set up. Now it's time to start tweeting. You can do this from your Twitter home page, your mobile phone, a desk top interface, or a number of different ways. As stated before, the message can not be longer than 140 characters. If you use the Twitter home page to tweet, the input field will automatically count your characters and display how many you have available in your tweet. With time you will instinctively know how long this is and will not think too much about it.
How often should you tweet? This is a question that is in constant debate amongst all users of Twitter. Some say that you shouldn't tweet more than six times a day, some say ten to twelve is on the high end. I've seen many people that tweet every half hour.
The main thing to consider when you tweet is if you are adding something of value. People in general don't want to hear about every aspect of your life/business. However, some light or colorful commentary can be a good thing. This is a bit of an art, not a science, so there are no hard set in stone rules on this. Just consider that every tweet is a branding impression. You are building a reputation with your followers, so make sure you're adding something of value to the conversation.
This is really no different than any conversation you would have offline. You want to say something that is interesting, helpful, or just plain entertaining. You don't need to over-think it, but you shouldn't just tweet the first thing that pops into your mind.
You now have a general understanding of how to use Twitter. You have published your first tweet to your followers and in turn you should read and follow up on what your followers are saying. In part three of this series, we will cover some intermediate functions such as re-tweeting, hashtags (#tag), link shortening, and more.

A Beginners Guide to Twitter (Part 1)
TweetersMarketing is all about helping small businesses and Internet Marketers reach their maximum potential/profit by leveraging the raw power of Twitter. If you have never used Twitter for your business or Marketing plan, this is the place to start. We have put together a number of articles on the uses of Twitter for Internet Marketers. This knowledge can be used by any online/offline business that is looking to grow their brand through Twitter.
What is Twitter? "Twitter is an information network. Millions of people, organizations, and businesses use it to discover and share new information."
We will be going over the basics of how to set up a Twitter account, finding your first follower, the basic functions of Twitter, as well as basic tweeting practices. We will then go into some more intermediate functions of Twitter and how to use them to your best advantage. Beyond that we will go over the top tools that you can use to increase your productivity and ROI by using Twitter.
Let us start with a small list of the core uses of Twitter as a marketing channel.
1. Promoting
2. Branding
3. Building a Community through Word of Mouth
4. Learning (Market Research)
5. Customer Support
In this article we will discuss the basics of using Twitter. Future articles will go into greater detail on the 5 points listed above. You should be comfortable with using Twitter in general before moving on to the marketing specific information.
So let's get started with the basics.
If you do not have a Twitter account already, head on over to twitter.com/signup and fill out the form to set up your account. The form will ask for your full name which will be displayed publicly on your profile. Your Username will be what most people will come to know you/your business by. An example is @fmracicot. Fill out the rest of the form and you're ready to start using Twitter.
Once you get your account set up, Twitter will give you a chance to see if your contacts are already on Twitter. It does this by checking your online address book. It does require that your contacts are in one of the supported services such as GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, or MSN. This is not a required step, but if you will be looking to connect with your existing contacts on Twitter, this is a great first step to start following people.
Once you get into your account, you will want to confirm some of the settings to ensure that you get the best use of Twitter. Start by clicking on the Settings link. Check the "Time Zone", enter your location, and upload a picture (typically 150 x 150 pixels works well for this). You have the option to check "Protect my updates", but I wouldn't recommend this unless you only want those whom you approve to be able to get your updates. With the goal being to get the word out to as many people as possible, checking "Protect my updates" restricts your message from getting out easily.
If you are on the go a lot, setting your phone up to allow you to use Twitter on the go is a good idea. You can do this by again going into the Settings link and clicking on the Devices tab. Enter your mobile phone number and click on the Save button. Now take your cell phone and text message the code Twitter gives you to 40404 (the number will be different if you are outside the U.S.). At this point you will need to wait for Twitter to confirm that your device is registered. This usually doesn't take too long, but be patient during this step.
Once registration is confirmed, you will want to set up a contact named "Twitter". Enter 40404 as the contact number for the new contact. Now every time you want to send a Twitter update, you will send it to this contact name.
If you have a smart phone, you may want to look into an application specific to your phone that integrates with Twitter. Follow the instructions specific to your phone to install the application. These applications tend to have a lot more functionality to them than the standard text messaging of updates.
In part two of this series we will go over the basic functions of Twitter which will get you on your path becoming a professional Twitterer.

A Beginners Guide to Twitter Epilogue
We hope that our guide has been of help to get you and your marketing with Twitter campaign started. Additional articles after this will have more detail on how you can use Twitter to promote your business or product(s).
So, to give a quick recap, by now you should have a Twitter account and you should have some followers. Equally important is that you are following others as well. Remember that followers/following is very important in the usage of Twitter! So tell me, what did that first tweet fell like? Were you nervous, or excited? An old adage comes to mind that may apply here (by old I mean pre-Twitter):
Lead, follow, or get the heck (in some people's vocabulary this word may be substituted for another) out of the way!
It seems that everyone knows about Twitter being used as a social networking tool or a micro-blog service. But using Twitter for a business tool is not as commonly done. After all, what can you possibly say in 140 characters or less? Does this mean my business must be very dependent on acronyms to get my message across? Of course not, after all using acronyms means they have to be defined. So using one in tweet requires defining it (for those not fluent in Internet chat), thereby using up more characters from the allotted amount, kind of self-defeating if you think about it.
So however plain or clear you feel the acronymious (check out the urban dictionary on that word!) tweet may be, it's not! That's right, even common TLA's and FLA's can be confused or have more than one meaning. As an example:
"So IAC, using,b>TMA's does not convey TMI, even in a TNC way."
Or more clearly put (60 vs. 100 characters):
"So (In Any Case), using (Too Many Acronym's) does not convey (Too Much Information), even in a (Tongue In Cheek way)."
This doesn't mean you can't use acronyms, just be aware of how many you use, and how common their usage/definition is.
So why the Basics?
We're sure there are some folks asking, why are you doing any content on such basic usage of Twitter? Well, not everyone was given the Twitter usage model at birth. Though some may argue that if you need to learn the basics you shouldn't be trying to do marketing on Twitter, we here at TweetersMarketing disagree with that philosophy. Why shouldn't those that didn't have the luxury of knowing Twitter before be kept out of such a potentially rich field of prospects?
Just think about when you were really young and learning how to get mobile with your body. Or if you have kids remember when they were young (for some that may be right now) and learning mobility. Very few go straight from the crib to running the Boston marathon! First you roll, then sit, then crawl, then do the Boston marathon! Hmm, perhaps we left out a step or two there as well.
Our point is that we've seen a lot of material that just barges ahead assuming you already know the basics of Twitter, when that may not be the case. We're just trying to fill in some of the finer details along the way. If you already know the basics of Twitter and are looking for the more business/marketing specifics on how to use Twitter, then check out our Basics of Marketing with Twitter. Keep in mind though, knowledge is a powerful tool, who knows what little gems of information you might find in our beginners series.
So what now?
So right now you may be asking yourself, what's next? What can I possibly learn from these folks that I don't already know? What hidden gems of knowledge are they giving out that no one actually reads, like breaking up the monotony of training/imparting knowledge with levity/humor. To quote Lieutenant Saavik: "Humor, it is a difficult concept. It is not logical". While some question the wisdom of someone from the 24th century, we feel they may be on to something after all. Either that or Monty Python had it right in which case we will be spending more time laughing than analyzing facts.
I bring up the subject of humor because it's not just enough to have the facts about your business/product. You need to find a way for people to get really interested in following what you're saying on Twitter. Nobody likes to read a bunch of boring facts and details day in and day out. But if you can find a way to get the message out in a way that is fun to read and experience you'll get a lot more, and better quality, tweets in the long run. A lot of marketing is about exposure, the more you're seen the greater the chances of a sale.

1. Promoting
While Twitter is a conversational medium, some brands have found success in utilizing the channel purely as a promotional tool. Typically this entails a broadcast approach in which the brand uses Twitter to send offers to subscribers, much like how many companies use email marketing. Large corporations are using Twitter for this reason. Dell claims that they have generated over $1 million in sales via Twitter promotions. Twitter gives us the opportunity to promote our company and our products instantly to our customers at little to no cost.
2. Branding
Twitter is an excellent tool to create and expand your brand. Instead of seeking directly measurable/tangible benefits, a number of companies are using Twitter to successfully build or even extend brand values to new/existing customers. Utilizing a number of features in Twitter can rapidly spread awareness on the products/services you offer your customers. 3. Building a Community through Word of Mouth
Twitter is based around a community and engaging in conversation. People spend their time discussing just about everything on Twitter. The real-time aspect of Twitter makes it a power tool just for the fact that we can look at what is being talked about right now. We can then participate in the conversation and learn more about what our customers want and need. We then get use this new data to develop new products, enhance our current products, or even adjust our marketing strategy to point out that our products already fulfill their needs.
5. Customer Support
This is perhaps the most obvious and practical application of Twitter in business. Consumers talk about products/brands on Twitter all day, everyday, often asking support related questions or complaining about a product. This creates an opportunity for company's/brands to monitor Twitter conversations and to respond accordingly.

Writing Killer Content in 140 Characters or Less
How do you say what you want to say in less than 140 characters? Ask any writer out there. Writing short is difficult.
But it’s something comedians have been doing for years – writing short, pithy punch lines. Ask Comedian Michael Ian Black who recently decided to add advertisements to his tweets. Black wrote in his blog “As of today, I’ve written 2,655 tweets. That’s a lot of free material, all of it contributing to the entertainment of the 1.5 million people who follow me, as well as the multibillion dollar capitalization of Twitter itself.”
Yes, comedians have the art of writing short down. But so do poets. Talk about imbuing thought-provoking meaning with as few as characters as possible! I don’t know if anyone does it as well as E. E. Cummings.
Whether comedian or poet, writing short is a good skill to have, especially if you have a Twitter account (and who doesn’t?) which caps posts at 140 characters. I once had a mentor who told me the best writing uses the most effective language with the fewest words possible. A good goal whether character restricted or not.
The trick is getting your message across in 140 characters or less without sounding like a monkey with a computer. They say even a monkey with a keyboard can eventually spew out Shakespeare, but I think he might lose his audience first.
Michael Pollan provides a great example of writing meaningful but short content with this 7-word manifesto: eat food, mostly plants, not too much.
Those 7 words say a lot.
That’s what we’re looking to do with Twitter. Say what you need to say in as few as words as possible. The trick is to find ways to let people get to know who you are, what you have to offer, and have a little fun in the process. Writing with only 140 characters can be a limiting handicap.
Or not…getting rid of the necessary words and characters can also be freeing!
I gathered some of my favorite Writing Killer Twitter Content tips, added some of my own, and came up with this list. Here’s Tips on Writing Short in the Twitterverse:
- Choose Your Words Wisely. You want to pick the right words that evoke the right amount of meaning with as few as characters as possible. A thesaurus can help with this. For example, if you have a choice between two words, “lighthearted” and “fun,” go with the latter!
- Get Verbal. Select verbs that are more emotive to get your message across. An example would be to use a word like “leap” instead of “jump.” They’re both energetic verbs with equal characters, but “leap” implies more emotion.
- Lolly, lolly, lolly leave your adverbs here. Dustin Wax suggested on Lifehack that one way to shorten characters is to leave adverbs to a minimum. Adverbs use up important real estate and your content will be perfectly fine without it. Well, there’s an example of an adverb right there. I didn’t need to say “perfectly and fine” to get my point across. Don’t use two words when you can use one.
- KISS. Have you heard the saying, Keep it Simple, Stupid? That notion works here too. One way of doing that is to do what Dom Sagolla recommends in his book 140 Characters, keep your tweets focused on one thought. Hey puts it this way, we need to learn to “say more with less.”
- Writing is in the rewriting. The folks at ReadWriteWeb ask an interesting question. Maybe we should all learn to read and write in Mandarin where each character is actually a word. That’s a great idea, but in the meantime try this tip. Write exactly what you want to say, then begin the process of rewriting; paring it down while keeping an eye on that character count.
- Know the lingo. Twitterville has it’s own grammar. Use it. I promise there will be no school marms tapping your hands with rulers. And if there are, you can ignore them. Some examples of Twitterville Grammar is leaving out unnecessary words such as “that” and “which.” People understand what you’re trying to say without them.
- It’s not about you. Leave out personal pronouns. You can just say, “Going to BlogHer Food!”
- It’s all about you. Lisa Barone reminds us in her post How to Write Better Tweets to be sure to keep Twitter posts personal so people will want to read them.
- Don’t beat around the bush. Tweeting is not the time to be cryptic. Say what you want to say, but leave out the “I think” explanatory phrases. Of course you think it, otherwise you wouldn’t be tweeting it.
- The Link-anizer. If you’ve got more to say than 140 characters allows, write a provocative intro and then link to the rest of it. There are oodles of link shorteners out there – Tinyurl, Hootsuite, Bit.ly, etc. Pick your favorite and use it!
- Alternate Universe. Mark Fulton explained in a recent post on TwiTips that “Twitter accepts more than just normal characters.” Most keyboards allow you to create symbols with special “alt” characters. Fulton recommends the tool TwitterKeys to have all these symbols at your fingertips. Thanks, Mark! We ♥ you!
- Size Matters. Copyblogger suggests using small words. They say “…simple words work better than big ones. Write ‘get’ instead of ‘procure.’ Write ‘use’ rather than ‘utilize.’ Use the longer words only if your meaning is so precise there is no simpler word to use.”
- Be Creative. Mark Twain once said, “I don’t give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.” Twains words ring true today. English is a living language and Twitter is just the place to have some fun with your word choices.

The End of the 140 Character Tweet and its Repercussions
A note from the Editor: After a too-long haitus, Twitip is back. We’ve got some great posts lined up, and we’re always looking for more. This post by Neal Wiser is the kickoff post to our return to a regular posting schedule. Thank you to all who have stayed with us! – Lara
A few weeks ago, Iain Dodsworth, founder and CEO of TweetDeck, introduced Deck.ly, a new component to TweetDeck that allows users to send tweets greater than 140 characters in length. While exceeding the 140 character limit is controversial to some Twitter purists, other services, such as TwitLonger, do the same. But what makes the Deck.ly move different is that it gives Dodsworth, whose TweetDeck has millions of users, the potential to free TweetDeck from its dependence on Twitter.
Or does it?
On the heels of the Deck.ly announcement, TweetDeck was acquired by UberMedia who already owns several other Twitter apps. Yet almost as soon as UberMedia announced the TweetDeck acquisition, Twitter fired a warning shot across UberMedia’s bow by cutting off access to UberMedia’s Echofon, UberTwitter, Twidroyd and UberCurrent apps for alleged policy violations.
TweetDeck, which is highly, but not wholly dependent upon Twitter (it also allows users to connect to other social networks such as Facebook and Linkedin), continued to operate normally during the shutdown.
Perhaps it’s because with the TweetDeck acquisition UberMedia now controls an estimated 20% of the world’s daily tweets and TweetDeck represents the vast majority of that traffic. Any wholesale shutdown of UberMedia that includes TweetDeck would be extremely damaging to Twitter. Conversely, the vast majority of TweetDeck’s traffic goes to Twitter. Clearly, ending the Twitter/TweetDeck relationship, at least for now, would be something close to Mutual Assured Destruction.
The Shot Heard Around the World
Schoolhouse Rock
To be sure, many developers are trying to expand their business models beyond Twitter, but only TweetDeck and Seesmic have any hope of success due to the sizes of their user bases (listen to my interview with Seesmic founder Loic Le Meur where we discussed Twitter dependency). Ironically, Deck.ly actually offers Twitter its biggest opportunity to make dramatic, and perhaps necessary, changes to its platform.
While the 140 character limit has been in place since Twitter’s launch, many users have felt constrained by that limit. Others hold the limits in near reverence and consider it an integral part of what makes Twitter Twitter. Yet this may be Twitter’s big opportunity to break free of that albatross. With its new funding and new leadership, this could be Twitter’s chance to innovate and do something truly bold.
Only Nixon Could go to China
For years, Twitter has depended upon its ecosystem of third-party developers for innovation. The results have been some fantastic tools and services that have added significant value to the overall Twitter experience. Creating an environment to allow this to happen was a brilliant move on behalf of Twitter’s creators. Unfortunately, Twitter’s behavior towards their developers over the past year has been less than encouraging (again, see Twitter Commits Suicide (or Twipocalypse Now: Redux).
The problem is that Twitter thinks it needs to drive traffic to twitter.com to make their advertising products pay off. But the reality is that, in its present form, Twitter is so feature poor and so much traffic access twitter through other means (via those third-party apps) that continuing to develop twitter.com, and alienating those third-party developers in the process, is both a distraction and foolish.
Where Nixon went to China, Twitter should focus on continuing to develop itself as a platform, not as a destination. As a platform, Twitter could finally stabilize itself and put an end to the notorious Fail Whale (who showed its blowhole again just this past week).
Twitter could then figure out how to actually make money while simultaneously prompting continued innovation by its third-party developers and perhaps even invigorating them by allowing them to share in revenue that could come through those apps.
As Jeff Pester correctly stated, “Twitter is an information utility – it’s admitted as much on several occasions. It should start acting and pricing its product like one.”
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

8 Tips on Guest Posting Your Way to Twitter Dominance
I’ll be honest: I’m a bad tweeter (or twitterer?). I’ve been on Twitter for about seven months, and I only have 680 followers. It’s been a struggle, mainly because I haven’t put much time into it as I should.
So recently I’ve resolved get better. I’ve RT’d my followers tweets, focused less of my tweets on my blog, and started building relationships. But I’ve discovered something crazy: guest posting rocks for twitter. To start the month of February, after over six months of twittering, I had 347 followers. As of today I have 680.
In that time, I had two guest posts go up on Daily Blog Tips and Write to Done. After we published the guest post on Daily Blog Tips, we went from 400 followers to about 575 in one week. We gained nearly 20 followers a day. The next week, when we had a guest post on Write to Done, we added about 75 more.
Guest posts won’t just help your blog, they help you get followers. In the last month, I’ve doubled my number of followers, and guest posting is the reason why. I’ve gotten more followers from guest posts then finding people in my niche on wefollow, or through random searches. Most importantly, I’ve found better followers who actually want to read what I have to write.
The bottom line: guest posting works. It will get you more followers on Twitter. Here’s how:
1. You Need a Catchy Title – To get an article to spread on twitter, you need a good twitter title. The catchier your title, the better. But it also has to be clear. Helpful titles (like “9 More Ways to promote Your Blog Offline”, or “10 Writing Rules You Can’t break…And How To Break Them”) will spread like twitter wildfire. Check out these tips for better titles on your tweets.
2. Write Great Content – Write a good guest post. If what you write is awesome, tweeters–particularly honest, genuine tweeters–will want to RT what you have to say. The best way to get people talking (or tweeting) is to give them something to talk (or tweet) about.
3. Be a Good Guest Poster - Make sure you follow good guest poster etiquette. Check out these links over at Problogger for tips on how to be an exceptional guest poster. If one guest post gets you 125 new followers, a second may bring in 100 more.
4. Aim for Popular Blogs – Popular blogs–like Problogger, CopyBlogger, etc–automatically get tons of RTs. A lot of these RTs aren’t honest, they come from twitter aggregates, but still you’ll get a lot more exposure than you would have on your small twitter account or blog. Leverage their size.
5. Give Your Best Stuff Away – At least in the beginning. Platforms–again, like Problogger, CopyBlogger, etc–will get you more eye balls, which means more RTs, which means more followers. Use that opportunity to get your unique, fresh perspective out there.
6. Follow your Re-tweeters – Most blogs have a Tweetmeme button. Click on it, and follow the people who liked your post. You can also do this by searching for your post’s title on Twitter. If someone liked your insights once, chances are they’ll like your insights in the future.
7. Thank your Re-tweeters – If you have the time, this lets people know you appreciate what they have done for you.
8. Promote Your Guest Post - Re-tweet your post and see if it strikes a chord with your followers. You should already be doing this.

10 Easy Steps for Twitter Beginners
In this guest post Aira Bongco (@airabongco) shares 10 tips for Beginners who are just getting into Twitter.
So you just signed up for Twitter. You make your first tweet and you realize you don’t have any followers. “What a dumb idea!” You say. “Who the hell would be interested in what I’m doing anyway?”
Don’t worry. You’re normal. That is a sign that you are a Twitter beginner. A lot of us Twitter users (or addicts) went through the same questioning routine. And look at us now. We’re geeks who are on Twitter all day and night and we can’t stop tweeting.
So you want to be like us? It’s not that hard really. Just follow these simple steps.

The first thing you need to do is to set up that profile. See that bar on top of your twitter page? Click Settings and start filling up your profile. The notable areas in here are URL, bio, picture and design. Put up a link to your site or blog in here along with a brief description. Upload a picture to differentiate yourself from the others and then tweak your Twitter design. Like any other social networking site, it is important to completely express what you are or what you stand for in your profile.
Now that you have a profile, start following people. You can find these people in Twitter directories. I use Twellow and JustTweetIt. These sites can introduce you to Twitter users that have the same interest as yours. Follow these people and observe their tweets. You may also try following who these people follow but read up their descriptions and visit their blogs to make sure you’re still on the right niche. Being on the right niche will make it easy for you to build a community with a similar interest.
So now that you are following people, you will now see some tweets on your board. Read up on what the people your following are up to and reply if it interests you. For example, a person narrates how he is going to conduct a meeting. You may then reply with ideas. When someone asks a question, don’t hesitate to answer if you know it. Don’t be afraid to interact.
Spam is the cause of many unfollows on Twitter. There is a character limit for a reason. Do not send repeated messages to people. Do not constantly direct message (DM) them with links.
Alright so you’re blending in the community. Now update daily if possible. I know some Twitter users who unfollow because of inactivity. Reply to people and update people with what’s going on with your life. Soon you’ll be recognized and you’ll get some follows.
Now it’s your time to contribute. Find a topic that will interest your niche and tweet it. Since you have established relationships with your followers (through replies), you will get more attention. It’s a nice strategy to always append “please retweet” at the end of your tweet. There will be some people who will be so interested that they will retweet. There are others who will reply to you about the link you tweeted. But you are not a “nobody” anymore. You are not just talking to yourself. People are now responding to your tweets.
The famous saying “Do unto others what you want others to do unto you” holds here. Before you can receive retweets, you must help others first by retweeting their messages. Help the people in your niche. One day you’ll be surprised on how eager they are to help you back.
Now it’s time to create constant connections. Soon you will find that some users are more active than others. You will get to talk with the same group of people at the same time every night. But don’t get bored. Interact with these people and create relationships. Ask how they are doing and try to touch on their interests.
Have a blog? Then post to Twitter when you have a post that will interest your niche. Have a Facebook profile? Then ask people to add you. Twitter is really a vital part of web 2.0. It can serve as the core. It can let you build relationships that can branch out to other social networks.
Have a lot of friends on Twitter? Then take it to another level. Ask for their messenger and talk to these people on a more intimate level. Call them through Skype or even arrange a meet-up. Twitter can create real relationships.
Congratulations! You are now an official member of the Twitter community. You talk, act, think and breathe like us. Perhaps you find yourself spending every five minutes updating Twitter on what you are doing. But I guess I’ll save Twitter addiction for next time.
